OSHA 10-Hour General Industry Training

This training program is intended to provide entry level general industry workers information about how to identify, abate, avoid, and prevent job related hazards on a job site, as well their rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint. The general industry setting includes health care, manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, and retail. The training emphasizes hazard identification, avoidance, control, and prevention, not OSHA standards. The course is designed for all workers having an interest in OSHA and OSHA compliance, including warehousing and manufacturing employees, general industry managers, and supervisors.

The course curriculum includes:
Mandatory – 6 hours

  1. Introduction to OSHA (1h)
    Covers workers’ rights, employer responsibilities and how to file a complaint. Includes helpful worker safety and health resources. Provides samples of a weekly fatality and catastrophe report, safety data sheet and the OSHA Log of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses (OSHA form 300).
  2. Walking and Working Surfaces, including Fall Protection (1h)
  3. Exit Routes, Emergency Action Plans, Fire Prevention Plans, and Fire Protection (1h)
  4. Electrical (1h)
  5. Personal Protective Equipment (1h)
  6. Hazard Communication (1h)

Elective – 2 hours
(at least 2 topics, half-hour minimum on each topic)

  1. Hazardous Materials
  2. Materials Handling
  3. Machine Guarding
  4. Introduction to Industrial Hygiene
  5. Blood borne Pathogens
  6. Ergonomics
  7. Safety and Health Program

Optional – 2 hours
(minimum length is half-hour on any one topic)

The New England Consortium (TNEC), based at UMass Lowell, is offering four different OSHA trainings at no-cost. Each of the courses will help foster an awareness of the hazards encountered when working within the offshore wind industry and how to control and mitigate these hazards. This training is supported by funding from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Training can be provided on site at your facility. Courses include:

The New England Consortium, based UMass Lowell, is a worker health and safety training program that has been delivering training since 1987 in hazardous materials operations, emergency response, infectious disease preparedness, disaster preparedness, and general workplace health and safety.
