In a recent publication from Safety+Healty, they indicated the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has launched a new website highlighting safe work practices and engineering controls for preventing occupational exposure to respirable crystalline silica. The resource emphasizes the hierarchy of controls and provides guidance on measures such as wet cutting, local exhaust ventilation, process enclosures, proper housekeeping, medical surveillance, and silica regulations.
Silica exposure is a serious occupational hazard in industries such as construction and stone fabrication, and TNEC is currently involved in outreach related to engineered-stone countertop workers. The new NIOSH resource could also support TNEC’s worker education and training efforts by providing practical exposure-control strategies and additional silica safety resources.
